Who we are

UNIQA Re is a licensed reinsurer headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.
As the Group’s reinsurer, UNIQA Re primarily supports UNIQA insurance companies by enabling disciplined risk and capital management in line with Group guidelines.

We assume the core obligatory reinsurance programmes across the Group, manage run‑off portfolios of former Group entities, and ensure continuity and long‑term value. In addition, we act as a selective reinsurance partner for non‑group clients, applying the same underwriting discipline, technical expertise, and long‑term partnership mindset.

Our Goals & Vision

UNIQA Re considers itself first and foremost as a service company for the benefit of the UNIQA Group. UNIQA Re strives for an adequate return on capital within the group targets and furthermore contributes to the maximisation of group results. By centralizing the reinsurance function, the UNIQA Group can also ensure a stable and efficient reinsurance policy. As a competence centre, UNIQA Re intends to extend know-how centrally and make it available within the UNIQA Group.

The history of UNIQA Group

The history of the UNIQA Insurance Group is rich in tradition and development. Its origins date back to 1811, when Salzburger Landes-Versicherung was founded. This early phase marked the beginning of a long journey in the insurance industry.

In 1922, Versicherungsanstalt der österreichischen Bundesländer was founded, which would later become UNIQA. A significant milestone in the Group’s history was reached in 1975, when Bundesländer-Versicherung acquired a stake in Salzburger Landes-Versicherung. This strategic decision laid the foundation for future mergers and expansions.

The 1990s were a time of change and consolidation. 1993 saw the merger with Raiffeisen Versicherung, which further strengthened the Group’s position. Finally, UNIQA Insurance Group AG was officially founded in 1999, marking the merger of several Austrian insurance groups.

Today, the UNIQA Insurance Group operates in 14 European countries and serves more than 18 million customers. This expansion and continuous growth reflect the Group’s commitment to providing comprehensive and reliable insurance services.

The history of UNIQA Re

The history of UNIQA Re began in 2003 with its entry in the commercial register of the Canton of Zurich and its licence from FINMA as a professional reinsurer. With a handful of employees, the company began reinsuring the first cedants from the UNIQA Group. As the international UNIQA companies grew, so did the volume of business assumed by UNIQA Re. UNIQA Re established itself as a competent and trustworthy reinsurance partner within the UNIQA Group and with the Group’s reinsurers.

UNIQA Re made a leap forward in terms of the business it assumed in 2012, when it was able to count the Austrian Group companies among its clients for the first time. In the years that followed, the company invested heavily in the expansion of its key functions of risk management, compliance and actuarial in order to meet the ever-increasing regulatory requirements. The assumed business remained relatively stable until 2020, whereafter the companies acquired from Axa in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia were fully integrated into UNIQA Re’s reinsurance structure in 2021, leading to a further increase in business volume.

Today, UNIQA Re presents itself as a reinsurer with a comprehensive range of products, in-depth expertise and a first-class service philosophy, true to the UNIQA motto ‘living better together’.
